Myanmar has recognised 308,975 Rohingyas sheltering in Bangladesh as former residents of Rakhine State and said they will be repatriated once security conditions in the region improve.
In a statement, Myanmar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the Rohingyas were identified as former residents of Rakhine following a verification process. The move is being viewed as a significant development in the long-stalled repatriation process.
Several previous attempts to begin repatriation have failed due to concerns over security, citizenship and basic rights. The process has become even more complicated amid ongoing fighting between Myanmar’s military and the Arakan Army.
