Brazilian football legend and 2002 World Cup winner Roberto Carlos has broken his silence over recent reports claiming that he had converted to Islam. The former Real Madrid defender has firmly denied the rumors and said the reports are completely untrue.
The speculation began after Carlos reportedly married Moroccan football agent Souheila El Tahiri. The rumors gained further attention following social media posts in Turkey claiming that the 53-year-old had recited the Shahada and embraced Islam at the guidance of a Muslim religious figure.
Speaking to Saudi newspaper Okaz, Carlos said he has great respect for Islam and enjoys seeing his wife pray. However, he made it clear that he himself has not converted to the religion.
Carlos also explained that their wedding included separate ceremonies to respect the religious beliefs of both families. One ceremony followed the Catholic faith of some family members, while another was arranged for his wife and her Muslim friends.
The clarification puts an end to the widespread speculation surrounding the football icon’s religious beliefs.
