Last updated: 8/13/2026 11:04:00 AM

The death toll from a powerful earthquake in Colombia has surpassed 250. In response to the devastating disaster, the government has declared three days of national mourning. Al Jazeera reported the development on Wednesday (August 12).

The government said national flags will be flown at half-mast at government buildings and Colombian embassies around the world during the mourning period.

A powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck Colombia on Monday. Several buildings collapsed across western parts of the country, while roads and other key infrastructure were also damaged. More than 100 aftershocks were recorded following the main earthquake.

According to government figures, 2,595 people have been injured. Rescue operations are continuing in badly affected areas including Cali, Pereira, Manizales and Quibdó. Rescue teams are using cranes, heavy equipment and trained sniffer dogs to search for survivors trapped under the rubble.

Meanwhile, blood donation and relief efforts have been launched across the country to support those affected. Rescue teams are continuing their efforts as fears remain that more people could still be trapped under the debris.
