A powerful Typhoon Dolphin has hit eastern China, triggering widespread emergency measures and forcing more than one million people to evacuate to safer areas. The storm, one of the strongest tropical cyclones to hit China this year, brought torrential rain, powerful winds and warnings of severe flooding and landslides.
Dolphin made landfall near Yuhuan in Zhejiang province on Sunday (August 9) with winds reaching around 151 kilometers per hour. The storm later moved inland after striking other areas of Zhejiang.
The typhoon severely disrupted transportation across eastern China. More than 1,300 flights were cancelled in Shanghai, while ferry services and other transport routes were suspended. In Wenzhou, more than 900,000 residents were evacuated and over 1,000 emergency shelters were opened.
Heavy rainfall has caused flooding in several areas, with some regions expected to receive up to 500 millimeters of rain. Authorities have warned of further flooding and landslides as the storm moves inland.
Popular tourist attractions and public facilities in Shanghai were also closed as a precaution. Authorities urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel and remain alert as heavy rain continues across eastern and central China.
