The US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrested nearly 51,000 immigrants over the past month amid intensified immigration enforcement under the Trump administration. It is the highest number of arrests recorded by the agency in a single month.
According to a report published on Saturday (August 8), ICE arrested an average of around 1,645 people every day last month. The previous monthly record was about 43,000 arrests in June.
The Trump administration has stepped up efforts to identify, detain and deport people living in the US without legal status. A special immigration operation in Georgia alone resulted in the arrest of 1,226 people last month.
The crackdown has also drawn criticism from rights groups. They allege that some people with no criminal records, as well as individuals with valid work permits or parole documents, have also been detained.
