The Norwegian Football Federation (NFF) has openly challenged FIFA President Gianni Infantino’s leadership, becoming the first national football body to call for his resignation following controversy over the sale of World Cup commercial rights to private investors.

At an important meeting held on Thursday (August 6) night, the NFF unanimously decided to demand Infantino’s resignation. The federation is also preparing to file multiple complaints against him with FIFA’s Ethics Committee.

After the meeting, NFF President Lise Klaveness said the federation no longer has confidence in the current FIFA president. She claimed that under Infantino’s leadership, world football has become increasingly divided and unstable.

Klaveness said a change in leadership is necessary to restore unity in global football. She added that concerns over FIFA’s governance system have existed for a long time, but recent developments have deepened those concerns.

Norway said it plans to send an official letter to FIFA next week demanding Infantino’s resignation. The federation is also preparing to submit complaints to FIFA’s Ethics Committee on three major issues. However, details of the complaints have not yet been made public.

The NFF does not want to limit its efforts to its own position. It has already started discussions with influential football associations in Europe and other regions to build broader international support against Infantino’s leadership.

Norway did not support Gianni Infantino in the 2023 FIFA presidential election. However, the federation had hoped that he would take effective steps toward structural reforms and better governance during his new term. Norway now believes those expectations have not been fulfilled.

Meanwhile, several European countries have also raised questions over Infantino’s leadership and indicated dissatisfaction with FIFA’s current administration. The growing criticism has created fresh uncertainty around the future direction of global football governance.
