Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapan has stressed the need for developing a universal humanitarian philosophy to ensure global peace and sustainable human progress.
Speaking as the chief guest at the Second International Conference organized by the Bangladesh Philosophical Society at the Teacher-Student Centre of the University of Dhaka on Saturday (August 1), the minister said philosophy is one of the fundamental distinctions between humans and other living beings. Without a clear philosophical foundation, humanity and civilization cannot fully develop.
He noted that philosophical inquiry emerged from humanity’s search for answers to fundamental questions about existence and purpose. Over time, religions became major platforms for philosophical thought and discussion.
The minister said that while all religions promote human welfare, differences in interpretation have led to the development of diverse philosophical traditions. This diversity, he added, reflects the multidimensional nature of philosophical practice throughout human history.
Emphasizing the importance of tolerance, mutual respect, and humanity, Swapan called for the development of a universal philosophy capable of contributing to world peace. He said the way individuals and societies perceive problems often determines how effectively they can resolve them.
According to the minister, people guided by humanitarian values tend to seek constructive solutions, while narrow-minded approaches often prolong division and conflict.
He also urged intellectuals and thinkers around the world to work toward establishing a common philosophical platform to help address the growing challenges facing global peace.
State Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Sheikh Faridul Islam attended the event as a special guest. Among others, University of Dhaka Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. A.B.M. Obaidul Islam, Jahangirnagar University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan, and National University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. A.S.M. Amanullah also spoke at the conference.
