UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called on Pakistan and India to exercise maximum restraint following the deadly attack in Pahalgam, a message he delivered in the wake of the two countries' contrasting diplomatic moves.

After the attack, both countries announced a series of countermeasures against each other, leading to widespread tension between the two countries.In such a situation, facing journalists in New York, UN Secretary-General's spokesman Stephane Dujarric said that the Secretary-General is closely monitoring this situation and is extremely concerned about it.
We strongly urge the governments of both India and Pakistan to exercise restraint to prevent the situation from worsening.Responding to a question, he said that the Secretary-General has not yet had direct contact with the top leadership of Pakistan or India. Dujarric also said, "We believe that any issues between Pakistan and India should be resolved peacefully and through mutual dialogue."
Regarding India's unilateral announcement to suspend the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty, the UN spokesperson said, "We do not support any action that could further escalate the situation. Therefore, we reiterate our call for restraint."However, within hours of the UN's call, there was an exchange of fire between Indian and Pakistani troops along the Line of Control (LoC).Azad Kashmir government official Syed Ashfaq Gilani told AFP that troops exchanged fire on the border. But there was no attack on civilians.
