A powerful 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck the southern coast of the Philippines, leaving at least one person dead and four others seriously injured. Authorities have issued a tsunami warning following the quake, according to the BBC.

The strong tremor hit on Monday (June 8), causing several high-rise buildings to collapse and leaving major cracks on roads and other infrastructure.

The worst damage was reported in General Santos City. Videos released by the Philippine Information Agency showed extensive destruction to large buildings and shopping centers across the city.

Rescue teams are continuing search operations to determine whether more people remain trapped beneath the rubble.
