A court has sentenced Sohel and his wife Swapna to death in the rape and murder case of child Ramisa in Pallabi, Dhaka.

The verdict was delivered on Sunday (June 7) by Judge Masrur Salekin of the Dhaka Metropolitan Children Violence Suppression Tribunal.

In its observations, the court stated that evidence confirmed Ramisa was raped and sustained multiple injuries before being killed. The court also noted that Sohel voluntarily confessed to the crime, as he never sought to withdraw his confession. Meanwhile, Swapna was found guilty of assisting her husband in evading arrest after the incident.

Earlier in the day, police brought the convicted couple, Sohel Rana and Swapna Khatun, from prison to the Dhaka Metropolitan Court, where they were kept in the court lockup before the verdict was announced.

On June 4, following the completion of closing arguments from both the prosecution and the defence, the court fixed June 7 for the judgment. The trial was concluded within just four working days.

Security was tightened around the court premises ahead of the verdict. In addition to extra police deployment, members of various intelligence agencies in plain clothes were also seen on duty.
