The death toll from the devastating flash floods and landslides along the Nepal-Tibet border has risen to 332, according to Nepalese authorities. The toll is expected to increase as rescue teams reach more remote areas.

The disaster has swept away homes, roads and bridges across several areas near the Nepal-China border. Around 1,500 people are still reported missing, including a large number of foreign tourists and pilgrims. Search and rescue operations are continuing with Nepal Army and police personnel, while helicopters are being used to reach isolated areas.

The disaster was initially suspected to have been triggered by an earthquake after strong ground shaking was detected in the region. However, the U.S. Geological Survey later ruled out an earthquake and linked the event to a massive collapse of ice and rock that generated a powerful debris flow downstream.

The powerful surge of water, mud, ice and boulders then swept through river valleys, causing widespread destruction within a short period. Rescue operations remain underway as authorities continue searching for those still missing.
