The death toll from a devastating flash flood in Nepal has risen to 16, while 384 tourists, including 105 Indians, are reportedly missing, according to NDTV. On Wednesday (August 26), a sudden surge of water from Tibet triggered severe flooding in Nepal’s northern border areas.

The Nepalese Army said the water level of the Bhotekoshi River rose sharply around 9 a.m., causing widespread destruction in Rasuwa district’s Timure and nearby Syafrubesi areas. Vehicles, goods, homes and other property were swept away by the floodwaters.

Thirty-two police and army personnel were also reported missing following the disaster. The Nepalese Army has deployed 14 helicopters and rescue teams to search for those still missing.

Officials at Nepal’s Flood Forecasting Center said a landslide in Tibet had obstructed the flow of the Bhotekoshi River. The resulting pressure, combined with a sudden mountain surge, triggered the flash flood.

Nepal’s Prime Minister Balendra Shah has instructed authorities to continue rescue operations in the affected areas.
