China has warned the United States against interfering in its economic relations with Iran. The warning came Tuesday (August 25) after Washington threatened broad secondary sanctions against countries that continue economic ties with Tehran.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said Beijing firmly opposes unilateral sanctions and will take necessary measures to protect its rights and interests. He also called for an end to interference in China-Iran cooperation.

The United States is preparing a second round of sanctions aimed at cutting Iran off from the global economy. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the measures could target Iran’s digital assets, technology, gold, aviation and shipping sectors.

China is Iran’s largest trading partner and a major buyer of its oil. Around 90 percent of Iran’s oil exports reportedly go to China, making Beijing a key target of Washington’s pressure campaign.

China has also urged the United States and Iran to agree to a ceasefire, arguing that sanctions will not resolve the conflict.
