UK Plans Special Drugs to Curb Sexual Offences

The UK government is planning to provide special medication to thousands of male prisoners convicted of sexual offences in England and Wales to help control problematic sexual urges. If the pilot programme proves successful, it could be rolled out nationwide by December 2028.

According to The Guardian, around one-quarter of the nearly 15,000 male prisoners convicted of sexual offences could be included in the programme. That would mean around 3,750 potential beneficiaries.

A pilot programme is already underway in 10 prisons and is expected to expand to 20 prisons by November.

The treatment includes sertraline, which can help manage unwanted sexual thoughts, as well as anti-androgen medication that reduces testosterone levels and sexual desire.

However, the government has yet to decide whether such treatment will be mandatory for offenders convicted of serious crimes such as child sexual abuse and rape.

Experts say medication alone will not be enough to reduce repeat offending. Counselling, mental health support and rehabilitation will also be essential.
