Bangladeshi Killed in Landmine Blast in Myanmar Border Area

A 25-year-old Bangladeshi man, identified as Md Saiful, was killed in a landmine explosion in Myanmar near the Naikhongchhari border in Bandarban. He had crossed into Myanmar to collect bamboo when he stepped on a landmine. The blast severed both his legs, and he later died while undergoing treatment.

The incident occurred around 9:40am on Monday (August 24) near Border Pillar-52 inside Myanmar. According to the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), the explosion took place about 300 metres beyond the zero line, near a camp controlled by the Arakan Army.

Locals rescued Saiful and took him to Naikhongchhari Upazila Health Complex, where he died while receiving treatment. He was a resident of Painchhari area in Dochhari Union of Naikhongchhari.

Naikhongchhari Upazila Executive Officer Ismat Jahan Itu confirmed the incident and urged residents to avoid unnecessary movement in the border area.

Locals said many people living near the border enter Myanmar to collect bamboo and other forest resources for their livelihoods. However, armed conflict and landmines have made such movement increasingly dangerous.
