Infantino Faces Tough Challenge, Ceferin Says

UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin has ruled out running for FIFA president but suggested that incumbent Gianni Infantino could face a tough challenge in next year’s election.

Infantino has faced criticism over a controversial plan to sell part of the World Cup to private investors. Ceferin said Infantino has lost support across the football community, including among fans, players and coaches.

He suggested that a new candidate could emerge to challenge Infantino in the FIFA election scheduled for March.

Ceferin, however, said he has no interest in replacing Infantino and prefers to continue working as UEFA president.

Criticizing the proposed plan to sell part of the World Cup, Ceferin said it would be even worse than the failed European Super League project in 2021, adding that it could have effectively meant selling football itself.
