Canada has announced retaliatory tariffs on a range of US products in response to Washington’s newly imposed tariffs. Prime Minister Mark Carney said the measures will take effect on September 8 and will be imposed on a “dollar-for-dollar” basis.

Speaking to Canadians on Saturday (August 22), Carney said negotiations with the United States had failed despite Ottawa’s efforts to reach an agreement. He accused Washington of making excessive demands and introducing new conditions at the final stage of the talks.

The new Canadian tariffs will target US steel, dairy products, household appliances, agricultural equipment, paper and electronic goods.

The announcement came just hours after the United States imposed 50 percent tariffs on nearly 20 billion dollars’ worth of Canadian products.

Carney said Canada had no choice but to take targeted retaliatory measures to protect its workers, economy and sovereignty. He also pledged to strengthen trade ties with other countries to reduce Canada’s dependence on the US market.
