Cargo Ship Sinks off Odisha Coast, 24 Sailors Missing Including One Bangladeshi

A Singapore-bound cargo ship has sunk in the Bay of Bengal off the coast of Odisha, India, leaving 24 sailors missing. The Panama-flagged MV Ocean-Winner sank about 240 nautical miles off the Odisha coast on Saturday (August 22).

The vessel was carrying 24 crew members, including 20 Chinese nationals, three from Myanmar and one Bangladeshi.

The Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre in Sri Vijaya Puram received information about the loss of contact with the vessel at 11:48am on Sunday. Following an alert from the ship’s operator, Victory Star Group Company Limited, the Indian Coast Guard and Navy launched a joint search and rescue operation.

Two Coast Guard vessels, Varad and Anmol, have been deployed for the operation, along with another vessel named Vijit from Sri Vijaya Puram.

So far, two people have been rescued from a life raft, according to the Indian Coast Guard. The search for the remaining missing sailors is ongoing.
