Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has taken oath as the 23rd president of Bangladesh. He took the oath before Acting Speaker of Parliament Kaiser Kamal at 7:30pm on Friday (August 21) at the Durbar Hall of Bangabhaban.

The ceremony was conducted by Cabinet Secretary Nasimul Gani and began with the national anthem and recitation from the Holy Quran. After taking the oath, the new president signed the official oath book in accordance with tradition. He then took his designated seat, formally assuming the responsibilities of president.

Acting President Hafiz Uddin Ahmed, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, senior government officials, political leaders and invited guests attended the ceremony.

Following the president’s swearing-in, new members of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s cabinet are scheduled to take their oaths at Bangabhaban. The new cabinet members include Abdul Moyeen Khan, Andaleeb Rahman Partha, Saching Prue Jerry, Mohammad Shamim Kaiser Lincoln and the Prime Minister’s Foreign Affairs Adviser Humayun Kabir. Aviation and Tourism State Minister Rashiduzzaman Millat is also set to be promoted to full minister.

Earlier on Thursday (August 20), Mirza Fakhrul was elected president with 255 votes. His rival, Colonel (retd.) Oli Ahmed, received 88 votes.
