Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has rejected US President Donald Trump’s claim that the United States now has full control over the Strait of Hormuz.

Speaking to reporters during a visit to Joint Base Andrews in Maryland on Tuesday (August 11), Trump said the US had complete control over the strategic waterway.

In response, IRGC spokesman and Basij chief Hossein Taeb dismissed the claim, saying the Strait of Hormuz remains fully under the control and management of Iran and will continue to be so.

Taeb also accused the United States of trying to create new tensions over the strait after what he described as a defeat in its conflict with Iran.

The 167-kilometre-long Strait of Hormuz is a vital route for global energy trade. Around one-fifth of the world’s energy products are transported through the waterway.
