India are scheduled to tour Bangladesh in September for a white-ball series. However, fresh uncertainty has emerged over whether the series will take place in Bangladesh, with recent political developments reportedly reducing the chances of the tour going ahead.

India last toured Bangladesh in 2022. Relations between the two countries became strained after the fall of the government following the student-led uprising in Bangladesh. A previously scheduled series in Bangladesh was also postponed due to security concerns.

Later, discussions between the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) created the possibility of holding the series in September. The BCB had also remained optimistic about hosting the tour. However, recent political developments have once again put the series in doubt.

On August 5, ousted former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and several leaders of her party held a virtual press conference from Delhi. The event reportedly created fresh tensions in Bangladesh-India relations, which could also affect the proposed cricket series.

According to cricket website Cricbuzz, officials within the BCB are now also uncertain about the tour. A senior BCB official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said he was doubtful about the series following the recent developments and did not expect a positive response from the Indian side.

Asked whether the series would go ahead as planned, the official said, “I don’t think so. We have made every effort from the cricket board’s side, but at this moment, the matter is beyond our control.”

The official also said that a decision regarding the series was expected by August 28, leaving very little time for the two sides to finalize arrangements.

During the interim government led by Dr. Muhammad Yunus, relations between the Bangladesh and Indian cricket boards had deteriorated. However, after the BNP-led new government took office in February, relations began to improve. Discussions between the BCB and BCCI subsequently raised hopes of a September series.

Despite the latest uncertainty, the BCB is not willing to give up hope until an official cancellation is announced.
