Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapan has said that truth-seeking and objectivity are the fundamental standards of responsible journalism. While public welfare is an important goal of journalism, he noted that ensuring the accuracy and objectivity of information is a prerequisite to achieving that goal.
He made the remarks on Sunday while addressing a seminar titled “Politics, Power and the Interconnection of Journalism: Theory, Reality and the Future,” organized by the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism at the University of Dhaka to mark its 64th founding anniversary.
The minister said that the modern world is facing not a shortage of information but an overflow of information, creating new challenges. Misinformation, distorted narratives and deliberate disinformation have become major threats to democracy, the state and society. In this context, he said, the primary responsibility of journalists is to verify information and present the truth objectively.
Swapan described journalism as more than a profession of reporting news, calling it a vital instrument for ensuring accountability in society and government. He said a democratic system cannot be strengthened without an independent and responsible media.
The minister also emphasized the importance of ensuring journalists’ professional security, economic dignity and freedom to work independently. He called for greater professional skills to combat misinformation effectively.
Responding to a question on freedom of expression, Swapan said balancing freedom with responsibility is essential. He added that the government is working to establish a Media Commission aimed at maintaining that balance.
According to the minister, the proposed commission will be a participatory and balanced institution formed through consultations with all stakeholders.
The seminar was chaired by Professor Kazi Mohammad Mahbubur Rahman, Chairman of the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism, while University of Dhaka Vice-Chancellor Professor A B M Obaidul Islam attended as a special guest.
