Suicide of Lamia, martyr of the July Movement

Lamia (17), the daughter of Jasim Uddin, a rape victim who was shot by police during the July Movement, committed suicide on Saturday night.
His body was found hanging from his neck in a rented house on Road No. 6 in the capital's Shekhertek area. He was later taken to Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital, where the doctor on duty declared him dead.
According to family sources, Lamia suffered a mental breakdown after the rape and was suffering from extreme depression due to social shame, pressure and fear of not getting justice. The family believes that these reasons forced Lamia to commit suicide.
The grieving family said that Lamia was studying in Dhaka. However, just a month ago, on March 18, she was gang-raped while on her way from her home to her relatives in Pangashia Union of Dumki Upazila of Patuakhali.After the incident, she bravely went to the police station and filed a case against the rapists. The case is currently under investigation and the Dumki police station has arrested the accused in the rape case, Shakib and Sifat, and handed them over to the court.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police said that they are investigating whether Lamia's death was a suicide or if there is some other mystery behind it. Detailed information will be known after the autopsy.
