The court has fixed May 6 for the next hearing of Jamaat leader ATM Azharul Islam's appeal against the death sentence in a case of genocide and crimes against humanity committed during the Liberation War. A full bench of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court headed by the Chief Justice will hear the case on that day.
The hearing began at 10:15 am on Tuesday (April 22) before a four-member bench of the Appellate Division led by Chief Justice Syed Refat Ahmed.Barrister Ehsan A Siddique, who represented ATM Azharul Islam, was accompanied by Advocate Muhammad Shishir Monir. On the other hand, Additional Attorney General Barrister Anik R. Haque and Additional Attorney General Arshadur Rouf appeared for the state.
Earlier, the Appellate Division fixed Tuesday for hearing the appeal filed by ATM Azaharul Islam's lawyer. The Appellate Division, headed by Supreme Court Justice Zubair Rahman, gave the order on Monday (April 21). Senior lawyer Ehsan A Siddique presented the appeal in the court.Earlier, on February 26, the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed allowed ATM Azharul Islam to appeal against the death sentence in the crimes against humanity case
During the Liberation War in 1971, ATM Azharul Islam, the then Assistant Secretary General of Jamaat-e-Islami, was charged with 9 types of crimes against humanity, including genocide, murder, kidnapping, rape, detention, torture and serious injuries, and looting and arson in the Rangpur region. A/M
