A powerful nor’easter is causing widespread disruption across the northeastern United States. New York, New Jersey and Boston are among the areas facing heavy rain, strong winds and dangerous coastal flooding. States of emergency have been declared in New York and New Jersey as authorities prepare for worsening conditions.
The National Weather Service has warned of dangerous coastal flooding, high surf and strong winds across parts of the region. The full moon is also expected to worsen coastal flooding by increasing tidal levels. Boston is under coastal flood and high-wind warnings.
The storm has left around 100,000 customers without electricity across the Northeast. Flooding has also affected roads and homes in parts of New Jersey. Air travel has been heavily disrupted, with hundreds of flights canceled and many more delayed.
The severe weather has also forced the cancellation of major entertainment events. The Global Citizen Festival, scheduled to take place in New York’s Central Park, was canceled because organizers said conditions were too dangerous for audiences, artists and staff.
Several other events, including Ed Sheeran’s scheduled concerts in the Boston area, were also canceled because of the storm. Sporting events have also been affected.
New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani has urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel and warned against driving or walking through floodwater. Authorities across the region are advising residents to closely follow weather alerts and local emergency instructions.
