At least 14 people were killed when a military aircraft crashed in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) on Friday (September 25). Senior military officials were among those killed in the crash in Kwango province in the country’s southwest.
The aircraft was flying from Kikwit to the capital, Kinshasa, when it developed a mechanical problem and attempted an emergency landing in Kenge. However, the area had no runway, causing the plane to crash into a residential area.
Military spokesperson Major General Efomi Ekengé confirmed the death toll of 14. He said 12 bodies were severely burned and could not be identified. The pilot’s body was found outside the aircraft.
Civilians, members of a government delegation accompanying two generals, and several military personnel were also among the victims. An investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the crash.
