At least 11 people were killed after gunmen opened fire on 14 people inside a house near Durban, South Africa, on Tuesday (September 22) night.

Police said 10 people were killed at the scene, while one of four injured victims later died in hospital. One of the victims was believed to be a pregnant woman.

According to preliminary information, 13 men and the woman were attending a party at the house when three men entered and opened fire. The attackers reportedly set fire to a car belonging to one of the victims before fleeing.

The motive for the attack has not yet been confirmed. Police said the shooting may have been linked to a dispute between rival groups. Some of the victims were reportedly under police surveillance over alleged involvement in illegal activities.

BBC reported that South Africa has one of the world’s highest murder rates, with police data showing more than 60 people are killed in the country on average each day.
