Putin’s Party Scores Big Win in Russia’s Parliamentary Election

President Vladimir Putin’s United Russia party has secured a major victory in Russia’s State Duma election, winning 350 of the 450 seats, according to the final results released by the national election commission.

Voting was held over three days from September 18 to 20, with the final results announced on September 21. Voter turnout stood at 59.32%, while United Russia received more than 58% of the counted votes.

The party has controlled the State Duma for 25 years since its victory in the 2001 election. It has won all four elections held during the past 25 years, but its latest victory is its largest by margin.

Al Jazeera’s Moscow correspondent Dmitry Medvedenko said Moscow may view the result and nearly 60% voter turnout as a sign of public support for the government’s actions, including its continued war in Ukraine.
