A devastating road accident in Saudi Arabia’s Al-Ahsa region has claimed the lives of nine people, including seven members of the same family. The victims included a husband and wife and their five children—three boys and two girls.
According to The News International, two young men travelling in another vehicle were also killed in the crash. Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province Traffic Department said the collision occurred after one of the vehicles suddenly changed direction.
The accident took place on the Al-Uqair–Al-Uyun road, one of the key routes in the Al-Ahsa region connecting the area with the coastal parts of the Eastern Province.
Emergency response teams, including firefighters and members of the Saudi Red Crescent, rushed to the scene following the crash. Rescue workers reportedly had to work to free people trapped inside the vehicles.
The tragedy comes as Saudi authorities continue efforts to reduce road fatalities and improve traffic safety across the country.
According to the 2025 annual report of Saudi Arabia’s ministerial committee on traffic safety, the country recorded a more than 60 percent decline in the road fatality rate between 2016 and 2025.
The report identified failure to maintain a safe distance from vehicles ahead as the leading cause of accidents, accounting for 29.2 percent of reported crashes. Sudden changes in direction were identified as another major factor, accounting for 27.9 percent.
Saudi authorities say improvements in road infrastructure, increased use of technology for traffic monitoring and faster emergency response have contributed to the decline in road deaths.
However, the latest tragedy in Al-Ahsa has once again highlighted the risks on Saudi roads, particularly the dangers associated with sudden changes in direction.
Authorities have not yet released further details about the identities of all the victims or why the vehicle suddenly changed direction.
