US President Donald Trump has signed a new sanctions law targeting Russia. The law gives the US administration the authority to impose tariffs of up to 100% on goods from countries that continue importing Russian oil and gas, potentially paving the way for such tariffs on Indian and Chinese products.
The “Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act 2026” allows tariffs of up to 500% on Russian goods and up to 100% on products from countries purchasing Russian energy.
However, no 100% tariff has been imposed on India yet. The law only gives Trump the authority to impose such tariffs, which would take effect if he chooses to use it.
India’s Foreign Ministry said the country would continue importing oil from diversified sources to ensure energy security for its 1.4 billion people. It also said necessary steps would be taken to protect India’s trade and economic interests.
Earlier, the US imposed additional tariffs on Indian goods over India’s purchases of Russian oil, but those tariffs were withdrawn in February 2026. The current reciprocal tariff between the two countries stands at 18%.
