US officials recently held a secret meeting in Oman with representatives of Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi group, Reuters reported, citing three sources who spoke on condition of anonymity.
The meeting took place late last week at the US Embassy in Muscat, according to Al Jazeera’s live updates on Wednesday (September 16). Two sources said the Omani government helped facilitate the talks.
US President Donald Trump had earlier said the Houthis contacted his administration by phone and urged the US to stay out of the war in Yemen. Vice President JD Vance later confirmed that Washington was in direct contact with the Houthis.
Meanwhile, US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee said the ceasefire between the US and the Houthis remains in effect.
