Saudi Arabia has issued emergency alerts in the western cities of Mecca, Jeddah and Taif amid concerns over possible attacks. On Tuesday (September 15), the Civil Defense Authority urged residents to seek safe shelter and follow official safety instructions.
The Saudi Civil Defense said the warnings were sent through the National Emergency Alert Platform. However, authorities did not disclose the nature or source of the potential threat.
Residents were advised to remain calm and move quickly to a safe location. They were urged to stay indoors, away from windows, balconies and rooftops, and remain in a secure place until the danger passes.
People who were outside when the alerts were issued were advised to enter the nearest building or take shelter behind a strong structure. Drivers were also told to stop in safe areas away from bridges and tall buildings and to avoid crowded or high-risk locations.
Authorities have yet to explain what prompted the alerts or what type of danger is expected.
The warnings come amid heightened tensions between Saudi Arabia and Yemen’s Houthi group. The Houthis have reportedly carried out missile and drone attacks targeting Saudi cities and critical infrastructure in recent days, while Saudi forces have launched strikes against Houthi positions in Yemen.
The emergency alerts covering Mecca, Jeddah and Taif have raised fresh concerns, particularly because Mecca and Jeddah are among Saudi Arabia’s most important cities.
