Apple has finally entered the foldable smartphone market with the iPhone Duo, its first foldable iPhone. The device folds like a book, featuring a 5.4-inch outer display when closed and a larger 7.6-inch inner display when unfolded. The larger screen is designed to make activities such as watching videos, gaming and multitasking more convenient.
120Hz ProMotion Displays
Both displays feature ProMotion technology, Always-On Display and up to 3,000 nits of outdoor brightness. The inner display also has a nano-texture finish designed to reduce reflections.
A20 Pro Chip and Performance
The iPhone Duo is powered by the A20 Pro chip, paired with a custom vapor-chamber cooling system. Apple says the device can deliver up to 35% better sustained performance than the iPhone 17 Pro. The chip features a 6-core CPU, 7-core GPU and a new Neural Engine.
48MP Dual-Camera System
The rear camera setup includes a 48MP Fusion Main camera and a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide camera. The Main camera offers 2x optical-quality telephoto capability, along with sensor-shift optical image stabilization.
For video, the phone supports 4K Dolby Vision recording at 120fps, as well as Cinematic effects and Audio Mix. Apple has also introduced features such as Duo Preview, Smart Take, Kid Cue and Duo FaceTime for the foldable design.
Better Multitasking
The 7.6-inch inner display provides more room for multitasking. Apple has redesigned iOS 27 for the foldable form factor, allowing users to work with multiple apps and windows more comfortably.
Apple Pencil Support
The iPhone Duo will support the USB-C Apple Pencil, allowing users to take notes, sketch and mark up documents on the large inner display. Apple says this feature will become available later in the year.
Titanium Design and Touch ID
The device uses Grade 5 titanium and features a precision hinge, Ceramic Shield 2 and an IP68 rating for dust and water resistance.
Instead of Face ID, Apple has placed Touch ID in the side button for biometric authentication.
Battery and Charging
The iPhone Duo uses a dual-battery architecture. Apple rates it for up to 24 hours of battery life with mixed display use. Video playback can reach up to 31 hours on the inner display and 44 hours on the outer display.
The phone can charge to around 50% in about 20 minutes using wired charging. Wireless charging through MagSafe or Qi2 can also reach around 50% in about 30 minutes.
eSIM-Only Device
The iPhone Duo does not have a physical SIM card slot. It is an eSIM-only device, with support for two active eSIMs and multiple stored eSIMs.
It also includes Apple’s N1 wireless chip, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and the C2 cellular modem.
Storage and Price
Storage options start at 256GB, with 512GB, 1TB and up to 2TB versions available. In the United States, the iPhone Duo starts at $1,999. Pre-orders begin October 16, with sales starting October 23.
Key Advantages
Potential Drawbacks
The biggest concern is the price, starting at $1,999, which makes the iPhone Duo significantly more expensive than conventional iPhone models.
The lack of a physical SIM slot could also be inconvenient for some users, particularly in markets where eSIM support is limited.
Another point that cannot yet be judged conclusively is the long-term durability of the foldable display and hinge. Since the device is new, real-world data on long-term use will take time to emerge.
Who Is It For?
The iPhone Duo could appeal to users who want a large screen for video, gaming, multitasking, note-taking and productivity while remaining within Apple’s ecosystem.
However, for users primarily looking for a phone for everyday tasks or photography, the high price means conventional iPhone models may offer better value.
