US President Donald Trump has said there is no possibility of the ongoing war with Iran ending before November’s crucial midterm elections. He claimed the war would end soon after the election and oil prices would also fall rapidly.
Speaking to reporters on his way to his party’s midterm election conference in Texas, Trump said Tehran would not be able to hold out much longer. He also argued that short-term economic pressure and hardship on Iran were necessary to prevent it from developing nuclear weapons.
The conflict has now entered its seventh month, despite Trump’s initial claim that it would end within weeks. The war has pushed fuel prices in the US to record levels and increased the cost of everyday goods, fueling public anger.
The conflict has also affected Trump’s popularity. Polls show a significant decline in his support, while pressure is growing within the Republican Party to end the war amid fears of losing control of Congress. Brent crude recently surpassed $100 a barrel.
