New Delhi has told Dhaka that ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will not be extradited to Bangladesh ‘under any circumstances,’ according to a report published by India’s Anandabazar Patrika on September 7.
According to the report, a high-level Indian intelligence delegation visited Dhaka about a month ago and met with senior Bangladeshi officials. During the meeting, the delegation reportedly made it clear that no extradition request for Sheikh Hasina would be accepted as long as she remains in India.
The report said India’s position is based on the argument that an extradition request can be considered only when the host country is assured that the individual has been convicted through due legal process.
The Indian delegation also reportedly urged that Hasina not be subjected to any disrespectful treatment if she returns to Bangladesh. It further stressed that her security should be given special attention if she is arrested.
