Argentina is considering holding a farewell ceremony for Lionel Messi on home soil following his decision to retire from international football. However, no final decision has been made yet, with the plan reportedly dependent on Messi’s wishes.

Messi announced his retirement from the Argentina national team on Monday (August 31) in an emotional social media post, bringing an end to his 21-year international career. The 39-year-old captain said the decision was painful but that he felt the time had come to step away.

The Argentine Football Association (AFA) has expressed its gratitude to Messi following the announcement. The association is now considering how to properly honour its legendary captain in front of Argentine supporters.

Messi made his senior international debut for Argentina in 2005. He finished his international career with 207 appearances and 125 goals. He also led Argentina to the Copa América titles in 2021 and 2024 and the 2022 FIFA World Cup title.

In his farewell message, Messi said he had always given everything for the national team and wanted to leave with the pride of having brought joy to Argentine fans. He also said that a new generation of players deserved their opportunity.

Messi's retirement came after Argentina's defeat to Spain in the 2026 World Cup final. He will continue his club career with Inter Miami.
